WHAT IS ASPHALT PAVING

Asphalt driveway material, which is also called hot mix asphalt, is made up of aggregate stone and sand, along with a slurry of tar-like substance made from petroleum.   The mixture is heated to over 300 F degrees and contractors have to work swiftly to instal it correctly.  Laying a new asphalt driveway is technically challenging and is not a do-it-yourself job to be tackled by homeowners.
A Few Pros:

  1. Flexible: Asphalt is more flexible than concrete and thus is less prone to cracking. Concrete either remains solid and intact and eventually begins to crack. By contrast, asphalt has a certain degree of flexibility for many years before it shows wear and tear.
  2. Affordable: Asphalt paving is typically cheaper to install than concrete.
  3. Hardier: in winter conditions: is less prone to damage by rock salt and ice melt.
  4. Faster-setting: Asphalt sets faster than concrete because it hardens by cooling rather than by curing.
  5. DIY Repairs: When you eventually need to resurface your asphalt, you can do it yourself with a driveway sealant. Concrete cannot be thinly resurfaced by the do-it-yourselfer.

ASPHALT INSTALLATION

An asphalt driveway is only as good as its base. Asphalt installed on an unstable base will develop problems quickly. There are three main options for base installation:

Install the Asphalt Paving on an Existing Driveway

If your existing driveway is in good condition and is not severely cracked or crumbling, hot mix asphalt can be laid directly on top of your driveway. A contractor will assess the height and thickness, taking into account garage doors, fences and existing stairs that could be affected by the additional height, before making this decision.

Remove the Old Driveway and Lay an Aggregate Base

Installing a new aggregate base is the preferred method. Typically 6 to 8 inches of aggregate will be installed under 3 inches of asphalt, giving your driveway the best foundation possible.

BEST TIME TO INSTALL ASPHALT

Spring and summer are the best seasons for installing an asphalt driveway as the colder the air temperature, the less working time the crew has to instal and smooth the asphalt correctly.  For this reason, good contractors are very busy during the warmer months so now is the time to  make sure your job gets scheduled.
